So I’ve seen the initial bubbling of New Year resolutions coming up more frequently, as is expected with the closing of a year. Not one myself to join the tradition of ‘new year, new me’ as you can take charge of your life or situation at any point/given time (admittedly a challenging feat nonetheless, especially to sustain). Instead my efforts are focused on unscrambling the code(s) to clear healed skin and thus continuing my ‘healing’ journey as opposed to a ‘fresh start’. Another understandable reason as to why NY’s resolutions rub me the wrong way. Suffering and healing are constant & cyclical not a linear goal achieved within a predicted timeline.
This brings me to the sensationalist concept of ‘Veganuary’. Where the world partakes in a trendy health reset for a month. Again with the almost comical timelines. Veganuary trivialises mine and others alike, challenging lived experience. An overwhelmingly isolated reality where you’re faced with discomfort and a painful daily reminder of failure. Dealing with the symptoms of chronic illness or any issue at that, outside of ‘good health’ festers a deep resentment. Veganuary makes a mockery of healing based lifestyles which largely follow a vegan diet. It commercialises and commodifies the ever pressing struggle and difficulty of ‘healthy eating’. Presenting a false narrative of ‘get up and go’ affordable diet. Which couldn’t be further from the truth?! From the over priced ‘Free From’ food aisles to the extensive directory of supplements required on repeat prescription to the endless and time consuming research and calculations on health, healing and how to optimise it for yourself is anything but affordable?!
Health is a privilege, reserved for the elite of our society…and Veganuary is its spoilt visiting cousin detached from reality.
